Android 16 release date confirmed by Google: Find out when you’ll get the update

Android 15 is out now and we’re already looking forward to Android 16. Due out in 2025, this next gen OS will bring new features and functionality to the Android experience. From improved notifications to new battery optimisations, Android 16 will be a big update for users who use their phone for work and play. Here’s everything we know so far about Android 16, from features to release date.

Android 16 Release Date: When?

Google follows a predictable pattern with Android updates, with a developer preview in Q1, public beta in Q2 and the final release in September/October. But sources suggest Android 16 might launch a little earlier in 2025, with a possible Q2 release. This could be part of Google’s plan to speed up the Android development cycle so they can release more frequent updates without waiting a whole year between major versions

Codename “Baklava”: A sweet new name

Google stopped naming Android versions after desserts with Android 10 but still uses dessert names internally for development purposes. Android 16’s codename is reportedly “Baklava”, continuing the tradition of sweet themed names. Android 15 was codenamed “Vanilla Ice Cream” and this new name reflects Google’s changing approach to codenames while still keeping the dessert theme

Features and changes in Android 16

Android 16 will bring several new features to improve user experience and device functionality. Here are some of them:

1. Improved Notification System with “Cooldown” Mode

One of the big features in Android 16 is the improved notification system with a “cooldown” mode to help you manage notification overload. When multiple notifications come in quickly from the same app – like group messages – the cooldown feature will reduce the number of subsequent notifications so you’re not bombarded with constant interruptions. This can be customised for specific apps so it’s perfect for managing high traffic conversations

2. Native Desktop Mode for Productivity

Android 16 will bring a native desktop mode which will bring a PC like experience to compatible Android devices. Although Samsung’s DeX mode has been doing this on Galaxy devices for a while, Google’s version will make it more widely available across devices. The desktop mode will allow you to open apps in resizable windows so multitasking will be easier when using a larger screen like a tablet or external monitor

3. Battery Optimisation: Charging Limit to extend battery life

To extend battery life Android 16 might include an option to cap battery charging at 80%. This is useful for people who leave their phone plugged in overnight or for extended periods as limiting the maximum charge reduces battery wear over time. Some manufacturers already offer this in their custom Android skins,

4. Audio Sharing

Another one is audio sharing. In Android 16 you’ll be able to connect multiple Bluetooth devices to your phone at the same time and share audio with friends or listen on multiple speakers. This is an upgrade from current Bluetooth and will make group listening easier and more convenient

More in Android 16

  • Smaller Quick Settings icons: Android 16 might have more customization options in Quick Settings, including smaller icons and a more organized layout for frequently used features.
  • Gesture Navigation: There’s also a hint that Android 16 will further improve gesture navigation to make multitasking smoother and quicker.
  • Privacy and Security: As with every new Android release, Google will likely add more security features to protect user data and privacy. This could be more granular permissions for apps so users can control what apps can access.

Compatibility and Devices

Android 16 will be available on many devices, especially flagship models from Google, Samsung and OnePlus. Google’s Pixel devices usually get the latest Android update first, then other manufacturers after testing and adapting the OS for their custom skin. Flagship devices from the last 2-3 years will likely get Android 16, but entry level devices might not due to hardware limitations.

Previews and Beta

Google’s beta program allows users to test new versions before they are released. For Android 16, Google will likely start releasing developer previews in Q1 2025. These early builds will give developers and tech enthusiasts a first look at new features and provide feedback on bugs. In Q2, Google will open up the public beta so more users can try Android 16 and provide feedback before the final release.

Android 16 in the future of Android

Android 16 will be a big update that not only adds new features but also improves core functionality to make Android devices more useful and user friendly. From notification improvements to native desktop mode, the update shows Google’s focus on user experience and keeping up with the latest tech trends. As we get closer to 2025 we’re getting excited about what Android 16 will bring especially for users who use their devices for productivity and entertainment. Keep an eye out for the developer previews in early 2025 to see what’s coming.

These updates, combined with Google’s focus on enhancing Android’s core functionality, signal an exciting future for Android users.
